Omega 3 | What Is It? What Are The Benefits?

Omega 3 – Usage And Benefits

Omega 3 fish oil is combined by two kinds of different types of fatty acids called eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). While our diets consist of red meat, eggs and nuts we find that the level of Omega 6 is much higher in the body than Omega 3, and the healthiest way in which to ensure fish oil is supplemented is to have a 1:1 ratio of both 3 and 6.

Health Benefits of Omega 3

“A ratio of roughly 1:1 is associated with healthier blood vessels, a lower lipid count and a reduced risk for plaque buildup. Fish oil can also decrease the risk of diabetes and several forms of cancer, including breast cancer. Fish oil works primarily through eicosanoids, which are signalling molecules. A proper ratio of omega 3:6 fatty acids will influence which eicosanoids are released in response to stress”.

Omega 3 is a supplement I recommend to nearly every client due to it’s great health benefits and also to increase their intake of healthy fats to hit a macronutrient target that I will set for them. For those who are looking to simply improve health if you are not working out, a 1g dosage of Omega 3 is the minimum level you can take. However to those who are working out, 6g of Omega 3 has been shown to to help with muscle  and joint soreness.

Further reasons as to why you may wish to use Omega 3 is that it has been studied to help reduce blood clots in the body however it should be said that it is important to ensure that you are using with caution when taking any medication and should always consult your doctor before supplementation.

“Studies show strong evidence that omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can lower blood pressure and triglyceride levels. There’s also good evidence that diets high in omega-3 fatty acids help with rheumatoid arthritis as well as osteoarthritis. Past evidence pointed to omega-3 fatty acids reducing risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death from heart disease, but recent research has refuted some of these findings. More specific research is needed to sort this out.”

Regardless of your goal, Omega 3 fish oil is one of very few supplements to have an incredible effect on the body and should be supplemented by everyone.
